There’s nothing relaxing about coming back from a long weekend or vacation feeling refreshed, only to spend your first morning staring at a spinning login screen. Password prompts, software updates, VPN issues, slow systems, and “why won’t this open?” moments can quickly take the shine off your first day back. A little preparation before you leave can help make your return much smoother.
Before you set your out-of-office reply and head out, take a few minutes to do these three simple things.
1. Restart Before You Leave
Before you leave for a long weekend or vacation, restart your computer and give it time to finish any updates. Many first-day-back tech delays happen because updates were waiting to install, software needed a reboot, or the system had been running too long without a fresh start.
Taking a few minutes to restart before you leave can help your computer come back ready to work when you do.
2. Make Sure Remote Access and Files Are Ready
If you plan to check in while you’re away, make sure your access and files are ready before you leave. Confirm that your laptop, VPN, cloud apps, password manager, and multi-factor authentication are working from the device you’ll actually be using.
It is also a good idea to make sure important files have finished syncing to OneDrive, SharePoint, Google Drive, Dropbox, or your company’s approved file system. Files saved only to your desktop, downloads folder, or a local device may not be available when you or your team need them.
This is especially important if you recently changed phones, updated your password, have not used remote access in a while, or worked on important files right before heading out. It is much easier to fix these issues before you leave than when you are trying to handle something urgent from a hotel, airport, or your kitchen table.
3. Log In a Little Early on Your First Day Back
On your first day back, give yourself a small buffer before your first meeting, customer call, or deadline. Log in a little early so you have time to deal with anything unexpected, such as password prompts, software updates, VPN issues, printer problems, or slow systems.
Even a few extra minutes can help prevent a minor tech issue from throwing off your whole morning.
A little planning before you leave can go a long way toward making your first day back smoother. These simple steps help reduce the chance of small, avoidable tech issues stealing time when you return. A few minutes before you head out can save you from starting your first day back already frustrated, delayed, or staring at that spinning wheel again.
