It’s a good bet that Microsoft Office is an essential piece of software for your business. To prove my point, when researching this blog topic, the Google search “Office 2007 end of life” returned 9,680,000 results (wow).
On October 10th, 2017, Microsoft ended support for its Office 2007 suite (see a summary of included software here). That didn’t seem like a big deal to me, but my tech team assured me it was. Here’s a brief look at the issue and a solution.
WHAT DOES “END OF LIFE” MEAN?
Almost all Microsoft products have a support life cycle during which Microsoft provides new features, bug fixes, security fixes, etc. This life cycle typically lasts for 10 years from the date of the product’s initial release, and its end is known as the product’s End of Life. When Office 2007 reached its end of Life on October 10, 2017, it meant that Microsoft will no longer provide:
- Technical support for issues
- Patches for issues that are discovered
- Security updates to help protect your PC from harmful viruses, spyware, and other malicious software, which can steal your personal information.
- Online content updates
MICROSOFT’S NEW SOLUTION: OFFICE 365
Microsoft’s solution for expiring versions of Office is their new cloud-based Office 365. Office 365 insures you stay up to date on the latest version, support, and security updates. This is key, especially if your business is subject to a stringent regulatory environment. Office 365 is a subscription based application where you can select different tiers depending on the needs of your office. It has both a business version and a personal version. Most Office 365 applications include Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook. For a small fee you can also add Microsoft Exchange (Microsoft’s email service) as well as Skype for Business.
It’s hard these days to keep up with technology, especially for small businesses, but the benefits of performance and data security greatly outweigh the cost and inconvenience. Our team can help you expose vulnerabilities and recommend solutions that will best fit your business.
