Microsoft Sway is the newest member of the Office 365 suite. Some have suggested it will replace Microsoft’s popular PowerPoint, but perhaps each have their own place and functionality.

What is sway?

Microsoft describes Sway as a “digital storytelling app”. Sway makes it quick and easy to create and share polished, interactive reports, presentations, personal stories, and more.  You create the content, Sway suggest the design layout. You have the final say on your presentation. Think of Sway as a personal assistant with a designer’s eye.

Check out the video below to get an idea of how to use Sway for a simple project.

Sway Versus PowerPoint

Check out this article for the differences between Office 365’s Sway and PowerPoint. Both offer a platform to create aesthetically pleasing presentations, but the fundamental difference appears to be design control. Sway takes control of the design elements and is web-based where PowerPoint gives the user full control.

In close, we are not of the opinion that it is either/or with Sway and PowerPoint, but simply a matter of which best fits the user’s current project. Some presentations offer little flexibility for content and design elements while others will benefit from a fresh look.

Perhaps their direction and functions will change, but for now, both Office 365 apps offer a unique design experience beneficial to the end user.
